CALOSSO DOC and the Gamba di Pernice grape
Calosso DOC, established in 2011, is one of Italy’s smallest denominations, dedicated to preserving a unique heritage – the Gamba di Pernice grape, also known as Gamba Rossa. This rare Piedmontese vine produces a black-berried grape that dates back centuries, with a distinctive bright red stalk resembling a partridge leg, in Italian: Gamba di Pernice.
Historically, this vine was known in the Alba region as Pernicine, also called Imperatrice dalla Gamba Rossa, but it nearly vanished during the 1900s. Thanks to the relentless efforts of a few dedicated producers in Calosso and a 12-year collaboration with the University of Turin, Gamba di Pernice was rediscovered and replanted, ultimately leading to the creation of the Calosso DOC.
Today, Calosso DOC represents the commitment to reviving and honoring this rare vine. With its unique history and striking characteristics, it has become the symbol of Calossese viticulture, carrying the legacy of generations while offering wine enthusiasts an extraordinary experience rooted in tradition.
